SLA DBIO Student Travel Stipend

The Biomedical and Life Sciences Division of SLA will award a travel stipend of $1000 to a library and information science student who wishes to attend the 2011 Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA in June 2011.  Applicants must be or become members of both SLA and its Biomedical and Life Sciences Division (DBIO) and, if awarded the stipend, must agree to serve on a DBIO committee for one year. The stipend will be presented to the student at the business meeting of DBIO at the conference.

Nominations for the stipends should include contact information for the nominee, a brief statement about his or her interest in and potential for serving SLA and/or the Biomedical and Life Sciences Division, and interest in pursuing a career as an information professional in the subject field of Biomedical or Life Sciences.  Self-nominations will be accepted.

Nominations must be received via email or regular mail at the address below no later than 5:00pm EDT on Friday, April 22.  A winner will be notified by Friday, April 29.

Summer Course & Leadership Opportunities

The summer course Corporate and Special Information Services (3 cr.)
is being taught by Ron Larson. It allows you the opportunity to learn
about different types of special and corporate libraries and the roles
their evolving roles in today's information world. Ron is a well
connected professional in the field and the course allows students to
take field trips to various special libraries and speak with an array
of experienced professional librarians. If you enroll in this class,
you will also become a member of the national SLA (Special Library
Association) Chapter.

Also, the SLA student chapter at UW-Madison is currently recruiting leaders
for next year. If you are motivated to work with students who are
interested in special libraries, would like to learn more about them,
or would like to help create events and lead a student committee, this
could be a great opportunity for you. If you would like more
information about the chair, treasurer, marketing or secretary

SLA's Environment & Resource Management Division Student Award

SLA's Environment & Resource Management Division Student Award Deadline is extended to May 1, 2011

The ERMD Student Award recognizes a student who is especially interested in pursuing a career as an information professional dealing with environment and resource management issues. The award is $500.00, plus a $750 reimbursement award if the student comes to the SLA annual meeting in Philadelphia. The student must be enrolled in an ALA accredited master's degree program. This award is meant to promote both current and future involvement in and commitment to the library and information science profession prior to, during, and after the master's program.

To be considered for the award, a student must be an SLA member and write a 300-500 word essay describing his or her interest in the issues facing information professionals in the environment and natural resources fields. Essays should be labeled with the student's name, contact information, and educational institution. Deadline for receiving submissions is May 1, 2011. The award will be presented at the SLA Annual Conference in June. The winner is encouraged, but not required, to attend the annual conference.

SLA 2011 Student Stipend Award

Student Stipend Award
The Petroleum & Energy Resources (PER) Division, SLA, is offering a Student Stipend Award to help cover expenses at the 2011 SLA annual Conference in Philadelphia.
The Stipend includes $1,000 plus student registration to the conference plus complimentary entrance to any PER ticketed events.
The conference theme is a question, "Are You Future Ready?"

Eligibility
All Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate level library or information science program and be interested in a career in petroleum or energy librarianship. The 2011 SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA must be the first SLA conference attended.
 
Applicants must be members of SLA by March 15, 2011 to be eligible. Students can access an SLA Membership Application form at: http://tinyurl.com/2hfra4 and mail it to the address indicated on that form. The cost is $40 for student membership.
The recipient may not accept a travel award for the 2011 SLA Annual Conference from any other SLA Division or Chapter.

Application Procedures
Prepare a written statement of approximately 500 words on the following topic: "I am future ready and ready for what is next because..." 
Essays should not include what you will do at the Conference. Rather, the essay must incorporate the conference theme and demonstrate the anticipated benefits.
 
Please include a letter of recommendation from either a faculty advisor or the SLA Student Group Faculty Advisor.
