Mentor Speed Dating -- April 10
Sign up for "Mentor Speed Dating" brought to you by the Wisconsin chapter of the Special Libraries Association (SLA)
Who: All SLIS students interested in special (law, medical, corporate, museum/non-profit, etc.) or subject-specific academic libraries, as well as those still deciding on a focus.
When: Tuesday, April 10, at 6 p.m.
Where: SLIS Commons
What: The kick-off event for the new mentorship program that will run through the summer. The night will begin with brief introductions of all the participating mentors. Then, students will rotate among the professionals for a couple of minutes of one-on-one conversation to further explore their interests and compatibility in finding a mentor. After everyone has had an opportunity to meet, students will list their top three mentor choices; and as facilitators identify the connections, participants will enjoy free pizza and more conversation! Mentors will be announced before the end of the evening.
Why: This is an opportunity to network and find a friend in the profession who can help you through the rest of your education and the beginning of your career. The mentorship program is designed to be very informal -- directed by each mentor/mentee pair. It could be as simple as someone to recognize at a chapter event or to look over your resume, as involved as a volunteer experience at the mentor's workplace, and everything in between. There may be some special social gatherings for program participants during the summer, but nothing is mandatory. Remember, to make the most of the knowledge and experience you have to offer too.
How: Fill out this survey by April 1, to register for the program even if you cannot attend the "Speed Dating" event. Please contact madisonslasc@gmail.com if you have any questions.

SLA Student Award - win conference expenses and membership
2012 Joe Ann Clifton Student Award submissions

Submissions are now being accepted for the Joe Ann Clifton Student Award 2012 from the IT Division of SLA. This award is intended to promote participation in the SLA Annual Conference by an exceptional library science student. The recipient of this award will receive:
- Student membership in SLA for one (1) year.
- Reimbursement for expenses to attend the SLA Annual Conference not to exceed $1,500 and limited to the following: Economy class round-trip airfare to the Annual Conference (July 15-18, Chicago, IL); Student registration for the Annual Conference (including the IT Business Meeting); Lodging during the conference; Transportation during the conference; Meals during the conference.
- Recognition and presentation of the winning paper at the Annual Business Meeting of the IT Division. The winner must be present to accept the award at the IT Business Meeting. The winning paper will be published in b/ITe, the official Division newsletter.
Submission Requirements
- The topic of the paper should pertain to the use of information technology. A paper which addresses a topic in a practical rather than a theoretical manner is preferred.
- Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited MLS or MIS program at the time of the award competition.
- Previous winners are not eligible for the award.Entries may be a paper which the applicant has written or is preparing for a class but has not been published.
- Only one paper per applicant will be accepted. IT reserves the right not to award the prize if it is the opinion of the judges that no submission is worthy of the award.
IT will retain first publication rights of the winning paper.
Submission Deadline
The deadline for submission is March 30, 2012 (Friday). E-mail your paper to Beth Kraemer, IT Membership and Awards Chair, at kraemer@email.uky.edu. Please include "SLA IT Student Award 2012" in the subject line.

My favorite part is that I discovered you can create word clouds using wordle.net, so the display features a word cloud of all the divisions of SLA.

Wisconsin Historical Society Tour! Wednesday 11/16 at 9am
We will plan to meet at 9:00am next Wednesday at the circulation desk in the reading room. The reading room is on the second floor of the Historical Society. It would be great if people had questions ahead of time--if you are able to email them to me, then I can get them to Nancy and Ron ahead of time and they can incorporate them into the tour.
For a little background information: the newspaper collection at WHS is second in volume only to the Library of Congress. WHS collects serials in specific subject areas throughout North America, such as the labor movement; political publications ranging from libertarians, the religious right, to anarchists; genealogy newsletters; military papers; ethnic newspapers and lifestyle magazines; and more! WHS is also unique in that it is the library for the state, and is a government depository, and it's also the official library of the UW Madison History Dept. So there are some distinct user groups and special collecting areas that WHS serves.
