SLA 2011 Student Stipend Award

Student Stipend Award
The Petroleum & Energy Resources (PER) Division, SLA, is offering a Student Stipend Award to help cover expenses at the 2011 SLA annual Conference in Philadelphia.

The Stipend includes $1,000 plus student registration to the conference plus complimentary entrance to any PER ticketed events.

The conference theme is a question, "Are You Future Ready?"

Eligibility
All Applicants must be currently enrolled in an accredited graduate level library or information science program and be interested in a career in petroleum or energy librarianship. The 2011 SLA Annual Conference in Philadelphia, PA must be the first SLA conference attended.

 
Applicants must be members of SLA by March 15, 2011 to be eligible. Students can access an SLA Membership Application form at: http://tinyurl.com/2hfra4 and mail it to the address indicated on that form. The cost is $40 for student membership.

The recipient may not accept a travel award for the 2011 SLA Annual Conference from any other SLA Division or Chapter.

Application Procedures
Prepare a written statement of approximately 500 words on the following topic: "I am future ready and ready for what is next because..." 

Essays should not include what you will do at the Conference. Rather, the essay must incorporate the conference theme and demonstrate the anticipated benefits.

 
Please include a letter of recommendation from either a faculty advisor or the SLA Student Group Faculty Advisor.

Librarian Luncheon Panel Discussion

Several special librarians will be in attendance to answer questions, as well as offer views and opinions about their current library positions and the field.

Our guest librarians include Katherine Wesenberg from the USGS National Wildlife Health Center, Molly Hamm from Cogdell Spencer Erdman and Anne Moser from Wisconsin's Water Library. It is likely that other guests will also be announced closer to the date of the event. Pizza will be provided for attendees by SLA-SC.

2011 Library Legislative Day

February 22nd, 2011 is Library Legislative Day, free for library school students. Considering the new composition of the Wisconsin State Legislature, there needs to be an especially strong turnout at this rally to send a clear message to the Governor and legislators that libraries are crucial to Wisconsin's economy (i.e. businesses and job creation). If you are unable to attend, you can take part in the Virtual Library legislative day by e-mailing, calling, or writing your legislator on February 22nd.

This is an state advocacy event on library issues that is held annually in Madison. State funding is a crucial component for all library types in Wisconsin (academic, public, school, etc.) and is therefore crucial for Wisconsin citizens and our livelihood. Even if you don't stay in Wisconsin, this is an instructive experience for whatever state or library type you end up with. Here is a breakout of how this affects our library school program and library types:

• About 20% of the budget for public universities and their libraries comes from state revenue.
• This affects the UW SLIS program through the allocation (or lack thereof) for faculty members.
• Public libraries depend on state funding to support public library systems.
• School libraries depend on state funding through the Common School fund.
• All of these libraries utilize:
• Badgerlink (i.e. state-licensed databases paid through the State Universal Service Fund)
• Library Service Contracts (Wisconsin Talking Book and Braille Library, Wisconsin Library Services (WiLS), Milwaukee Public Library/ Interlibrary Loan (MPL), and Cooperative Children's Book Center (Assists with intellectual freedom))
• Newline for the Blind
• Broadband
• Statewide delivery

Here is a list of areas which WLA Library Legislation & Development committee is looking for in terms of preparation for the event:

• Making legislative appointments in late January
• Stuffing folders for Library Legislative Day (LLD) registrants
• Registration table at LLD itself

$1500 Inspec Travel Stipend Award

The Special Libraries Association Engineering Division administers the Inspec Travel Stipend Award. Inspec is sponsoring a $1500 travel stipend to be awarded to the student submitting the best essay as is described in the following competition announcement:

Award to attend the SLA Annual Meeting in

Philadelphia, PA, 12‑15 June 2011

Inspec is sponsoring for library school students the award of a $1500.00 travel stipend toward payment of expenses incurred while attending the annual Special Libraries Association conference in Philadelphia, PA, June 1215, 2011.

The Inspec Travel Stipend Award will be given to the qualified student who submits an essay of three or less double spaced typed pages that is judged to be the best essay submitted describing the following scenario:

"What is your vision of an Engineering Library in the year 2020. Describe the mission, services, collection, resources, staffing, location, etc."

Qualification for Award Competition: Be a student member of the Engineering Division of the SLA

Instructions:

1. Give your full name, address, telephone number, e mail address, and a statement, on one page, of your qualifications, as given above, for entering the award competition. Include the name of your library school.

2. Type your full name (without any additional personal information) at the top of each essay page. Double space the typing on all pages.

Deadline for Submission: February 9, 2011.

WLA Annual Conference: Create Adventure

The Wisconsin Library Association's annual conference began yesterday at Kalahari in Wisconsin Dells. The theme of this year's conference is "Create Adventure." The conference will run through Friday at noon, and offers many interesting sessions for attendees. A full schedule is available on the WLA Conference website. The book cart drill team from SLIS will be competing.

This year's conference will also feature a special focus on technology, including web 2.0, geocoding and social networking. WLA's blog features a post detailing the related sessions.

WLA is sponsoring a food drive for the Wisconsin Dells-Lake Delton Community Food Pantry. Non-perishables will be collected for the duration of the conference near the registration desk.
